Sewing 101

Remember when I bought my new sewing machine at the beginning of the year? I did lots of research and finally decided on the Singer Precision. I've LOVED this machine! But recently my stitches have been off and the sewing looks sloppy. I have never taken a sewing class ( except in high school, but that was ages ago) and am mostly just self taught. I tried everything I could think of to adjust the tension and nothing was working. I was wondering if my machine was broken.
Whenever I have a problem I call my mom. Don't we all? She told me I might need to get it serviced and clean it. I had no idea how to even take my machine apart to clean it! So, I decided to see if I could find someone here in town that repairs sewing machines. That's when I found my good friend DeVon.
This morning I went over to DeVon's house and had him teach me more about my machine. It turns out I've been threading my bobbin wrong this ENTIRE time! No wonder things were not working for me. I felt so silly when I found out what was wrong but I'm so glad for his help. He also told me more about my machine and how to take it apart and clean it. When we got home the first thing I did was sew. It's amazing how much better your machine will sew when you thread it right. ;)
Do you have any sewing 101 tips you've learned? Or have you had any silly problems like mine? I'd love to hear some of your stories.
Have a great weekend!

  3. I totally had the same problem and my machine would malfunction all the time! I even paid like $80 to get it 'fixed'. I had to fix that machine so many times that I really got to know it. And then I ditched it and got my one now.

Thanks for reading my blog, by the way.

  4. LOL! After 2 years, I finally figured out how to de-lint my machine (http://www.skooksplayground.com/2010/09/let-this-be-lesson-to-you.html). It would have taken 2 seconds if I had bothered to read my manual. DUH.

I also recently became enlightened about how my feed dogs really work. Check it out here . . . of course I had to blog about it: http://www.skooksplayground.com/2010/10/dissecting-your-sewing-machine-its-just.html
